OBJECTIVE
To create a fully-illustrated, youth-oriented, next level civics textbook produced in both print and on an interactive, digital platform to be taught in all sophomore Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) classrooms. The textbook would explore not only local government in Detroit but also the rich history of civic engagement in Detroit and the many ways to get involved as a youth.

PROCESS
The print book of the curriculum needed to be visually appealing to sophomore’s in DPSCD and have flexibility for a wider audience for the online portion.
- Print Textbook and Workbook: In collaboration with CitizenDetroit we created characters to help guide the learner through the class material and decided upon a look-and-feel for the book. We evaluated different visual directions with high school age focus groups and shifted the design based on feedback. Each section was brought to life with infographics, neighborhood illustrations, and character illustrations, then carefully laid out with the end users in mind.
- Website: We partnered with Milo Media to create an interactive, engaging website full of the print Citizen Manual content that can be accessed by anyone that includes three videos explaining key concepts of the Manual.
- Videos: We wrote three scripts and used the look-and-feel of the book to produce three videos and worked with the web development team to actualize the final project on the world wide web.
OUTCOME
We designed a 270 page textbook and 160 page workbook, produced three videos, and built an interactive online learning site. The curriculum launched in all DPSCD sophomore classrooms in December 2021. Our partners at CitizenDetroit and DPSCD are both extremely happy with the final products. The finished pieces offer an engaging, youth-oriented learning experience with a cohesive design between the three platforms. For the future use of all Detroit citizens, the Citizen Manual is a tool for aspiring civic servants for years to come.
