client
Detroit Youth Volume (DYV) teaches youth ages 3-18 to play violin using the world-class Suzuki method to nurture students' ability to persevere, be creative, embrace hope, and to collaborate and empathize with others.
OBJECTIVE
Detroit Youth Volume strives to function as an anti-racist, pro-Black Suzuki studio. A great deal of Suzuki materials in both print and online materials do not reflect the racial composition of DYV’s student body. In order to represent not only DYV’s students, but also the thousands of students across the world who may not look like the typical Suzuki student, the idea to film the Suzuki Book 1 and put the entire series on YouTube for free was born.

PROCESS
Filming on The Historic Blue Bird Stage, part of a 2019 exhibit in the Detroit Historical Museum called Salvaging Sound: The Detroit Sound Conservancy and the Struggle to Preserve Detroit's Musical Legacies, and performed by Suzuki teacher and musician Ashley Nelson, the songs were filmed in an visually pleasing, but simple manner, as they would be used as practice videos by students learning to play the violin.
outcome
The entire 23-video series has been uploaded to YouTube and is available to students everywhere.
